THE FIRST – A NYX Product Review

This blog has been a verrrrry long time in the making but I am so excited to finally have it up and running. I hope to create something I’m proud! Without further ado – here’s my first blog post on my fancy shmancy little blog!I decided my first post should focus on something I’m really passionate about. It’s something I have really enjoyed writing about and photographing. I thought a  post on the NYX store opening and all the goodies I received would be a cracking place to begin.

The World of NYX recently opened at the newly revamped Menlyn Mall and NYX goodie bags were promised to the first 200 customers in line. Being a huge fan of the brand I headed to the mall hellishly early with an equally makeup-obsessed friend.

We spent a good three hours in line waiting for the store to open but it was well worth the wait. A nice chunk of the Clicks store was dedicated to NYX products and I loved the selection of products you wouldn’t normally find in the small stands at your normal Clicks.  Loads of new products were launched too and I was in makeup junkie heaven.

Some of the new products that were instantly on my must-have list were the  Butt Naked palette (R475,00) which consists of fifteen eye shadows,  four blushes, two highlighters and one bronzer. I love the practicality of this palette but I was quite disappointed with the colour payoff of the highlighters. A few shades of the Liquid Suede liquid lipsticks also caught my eye but when I swatched a few in store I found they took ages to dry and that is one of my pet hates in a lipstick. however, my friend picked up a stunning shade which looks beautiful and I’ve seen some on Instagram too so I think these deserve a chance.

WHAT’S IN THE BAG

The goodie bag that I received was one I was super chuffed with. The goodie bag came with five products and a super cute lip shaped makeup bag. While the bag would be nowhere near big enough for me to travel with I find it’s a perfect size to keep in my handbag with some of my essentials.

Each goodie bag contained some different items but I was really excited with what mine contained. The bag included a  Butter Gloss (R109,95), a Chunky Dunk chubby stick (R109, 95) , a dual-sided contour stick, a lip liner pencil and an eyeliner pencil. My wonderful friend also bought me one of the NYX highlighters for my upcoming birthday.

I’ve taken a few weeks to try out all the products to decide how I feel about them.

INSTANT FAVOURITES

From the get go there have been two products that have really stood out for me. The Illuminator (R174,00) in the shade  Enigmatic and the dual-ended contour stick which I got in the shade Medium. These products are just incredible! The highlighter is a beautiful, rosy pink shade that has just the right amount of shimmer. I love the effect this highlighter has on my cheekbones, it adds a beautiful glow but without being too in-your-face.

The Wonder Stick contour stick was quite a surprise for me as in the past I have really not enjoyed using contouring products. Before this contour stick I was using the Smashbox contour kit which I found a bit tricky to blend and more often than not I would just forgo contouring. The contour stick was also super affordable at R199,90 compared to the R650,00 spent on the Smashbox contour kit. The NYX contour stick was a breeze to work with. The darker contouring shade is a really creamy, light coffee colour that I think works perfectly with my complexion. I find it blends out best with my finger rather than a brush which I felt didn’t help much. The highlighter shade was also really nice for accentuating areas and I even like to use it as an eye shadow base.

FOR THE LOVE OF LIPPIE

The Lip Butter was quite a surprise for me because I really don’t enjoy wearing lip glosses usually but I found this one quite different from your typical annoying, sticky gloss. I got the shade Strawberry Parfait ( Is that name to die for or what?!) which is a really beautiful, rosy shade that smells absolutely divine. It didn’t last long which I think is quite typical for a lip-gloss but I was pleasantly surprised with it so I don’t mind applying it every few hours.

The Chunky Dunk stick in the shade Berry Mojito was such a letdown for me. I love the bright plummy shade of it but the colour applies as quite sheer and I didn’t enjoy the way it felt. It is as if my lips always feel damp and the colour would fade quite quickly. I think it left a fairly nice stain on my lips but I would rather reach for my Maybelline Baby Lips plum lip balm. It has the same sort of colour stain but it’s a lot more vibrant and moisturising.

The retractable eyeliner in the shade white is a really vital piece in my makeup bag. It’s vibrant enough that it really opens my eye up when I apply it to my waterline but it’s not too vibrant that it looks odd. It’s waterproof so it lasts quite long and I think it really makes a difference to any eye look.

The lip liner pencil I got came in the shade Hot Cocoa  and it’s one of my favourite colours! It’s a dark brown/purple colour and it almost perfectly matches one of my favourite lipsticks. It applied really nicely to my lips and it was really pigmented. I like to apply lip liner to my entire lip and I found it really helped my lipstick last a bit longer.

OVERALL OPINIONS

NYX was a brand that I have always really liked, they’re not super expensive but their products are really nice quality. They’re worthy addition to any makeup bag! A few of their products have become absolute must haves for me and I really love what they add to my makeup routine!
